Your amazing Meghalaya trip starts in Guwahati, the gateway to the region. You must arrive at the Guwahati airport before 10:30 AM. The team will pick you up from the location in a cosy vehicle. Soon, you will leave the plains of Assam behind.
As you enter Meghalaya, the roads turn into beautiful rolling hills. Your first stop is Umiam Lake. Local people also call it Barapani. It is a giant blue lake surrounded by green pine trees. You can sit by the water and feel the cool wind on your face.
Next, you will drive past the city of Shillong via the Shillong bypass road. This path avoids city traffic and saves time. By evening, you will reach your homestay in Cherrapunji. The air here is clean and cold. Eat some warm local food, listen to traditional stories, and rest well.
Wake up to the beautiful sight of clouds outside your window. Cherrapunji is full of natural beauty and giant waterfalls. Day 2 is all about exploring these wonders.
First, visit the famous Nohkalikai Falls. This is one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in the country. It drops from a high cliff into a green pool. The view from the safe platform is completely breathtaking. You do not need to walk any steep steps.
Next, visit the beautiful Seven Sisters Falls. These are seven cascading waterfalls that flow side by side down the dark cliffs. The views are amazing during the monsoon months, like June and July.
After the waterfalls, explore the unique Mawsmai Cave. This cave is well-lit and easy to walk through. You can see strange rock formations that took thousands of years to grow. It gives you a great glimpse into the underground world of the region.
Today you will visit the beautiful India-Bangladesh border area. After breakfast, head south toward the town of Dawki. This area is famous for the Umngot River. The water is so clean that boats look like they are floating in the air.
You can enjoy fun outdoor activities here. Take a peaceful boat ride on the clear river. You can see the rocks on the riverbed easily. The boat ride is safe and organised well by local boatmen. You can even see the plains of Bangladesh right from your boat.
Next, drive to the famous Mawlynnong village. This beautiful place is known as the cleanest village in Asia. The streets are lined with colourful flowers and bamboo dustbins. The village life here is very peaceful. The local people belong to the Khasi community. They love nature and keep their surroundings spotless.
Just outside the village, you will see a wonder of nature. It is a famous single-tier living root bridge. Locals trained the roots of rubber trees to grow into a strong bridge over a stream. It is easily accessible by a short walk on flat stones. You will spend the night in a traditional stilt house in Mawlynnong.
Time to travel back north to Shillong, the beautiful capital city of the state. Your first stop is the famous Elephant Falls. This is a beautiful three-step waterfall. It got its name from a rock that looked like an elephant. The walking paths here are very safe and easy for everyone.
Next, drive up to the famous Shillong Peak. This is the highest point in the entire region. From the top, you get an incredible view of the whole city and the green hills around it. It is the perfect spot to take a group photo with your friends.
In the afternoon, visit the famous Don Bosco Museum. This place holds an extensive collection of tribal items. You can learn about the indigenous cultures of all the states in the Northeast. It has beautiful clothes, tools, and old weapons.
In the evening, head to the busy Police Bazar. This is the main market area of Shillong. It is a lively destination filled with shops and local food stalls. Try some hot local momos or local tea. It is a great place to buy warm winter clothes or handmade bamboo souvenirs.
Your wonderful 5-day tour comes to an end today. Enjoy your last breakfast in the hills. Pack your bags and see the beautiful green mountains one last time.
Your driver will pick you up from the Shillong hotel. You will drive down the hills back to Assam. The driver will drop you at the Guwahati airport for your flight home.
