Meesapulimala Trek Complete Guide: Permit, Route, Cost, Best Time & Tips
Team Social Exoticamp
23 Feb 2026Standing tall as the second-highest point in the Western Ghats, Meesapulimala is a must-visit in Kerala. Legend says its peaks resemble a tiger's face with whiskers.
Hiking here is a journey through Munnar’s famous tea gardens and misty forests. On a clear day, the views are incredible. You can see all the way to Tamil Nadu and the nearby Anamudi peak. To keep the mountain clean and wild, the government limits the number of visitors, so you'll need to book your trek in advance.
If you’ve been planning a Meesapulimala trek, this guide is for you. Here, we’ll walk you through everything you must know before setting out.
Unlike many other trails in India, Meesapulimala is a strictly regulated trekking zone. To preserve its fragile ecology, the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) manages all access. You cannot simply show up and start climbing; a permit is mandatory.
All bookings must be done through the KFDC Ecotourism website. To secure a permit, you must book a stay or a trekking package through the official KFDC website. There are various accommodation options, including the Base Camp (tents), the Sky Cottage, and the Rhodo Mansion.
Your booking confirmation serves as your entry permit. Due to the peak's popularity and strict daily limits on trekker numbers, it is advisable to book at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance, especially for weekend trips.
If you want to experience Munnar’s highest peaks without the headache of planning, Exoticamp’s Meesapulimala package is ideal for you.
This package takes the hassle out of logistics, providing a seamless transition from the bustling streets of Munnar to the silent, starry nights of the Rhodo Valley.
It is designed for travellers who seek the Rhodo Valley experience, complete with campfire circles, misty mornings, and expert-led navigation. This ensures you witness the famous sea of clouds at sunrise without the stress of independent planning.
Here’s what you get when you book with Exoticamp:
There are two main paths to the summit, varying significantly in both the scenery you’ll see and the effort required.
This is the most popular and official route. The journey begins with a rugged jeep safari from Munnar to the KFDC Base Camp (about 24 km). From the Base Camp, you are taken further up to Rhodo Valley, the last point accessible by vehicle.
This is the backdoor entry, starting from the Kurangani village in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu. It is significantly more gruelling than the Munnar side.
Meesapulimala is categorized as a Moderate trek. While it doesn't require technical mountaineering skills, it does demand a decent level of physical fitness.
The cost of the trek varies depending on how you choose to experience it.
This is the best time. Post-monsoon, the hills are a vibrant, velvet green. By November, the mist starts to settle, and temperatures drop. December and January offer the clearest skies, perfect for witnessing the sea of clouds during sunrise. Expect temperatures to dip to 0°C to 5°C at night.
While it’s warmer, the visibility remains good. However, the lush green grass turns into a golden-brown hue. It is the best time to see the Rhododendrons in full bloom. Be prepared for the afternoon sun, which can be harsh.
The Western Ghats receive heavy rainfall, making the trails slippery and treacherous. Leeches are highly active during this time, and the peak is often shrouded in thick fog, completely obscuring the views. The KFDC may also close the trek during periods of extreme rain or wind.
More than just a destination, the Meesapulimala trek is a testament to the raw, rugged beauty of the Western Ghats. Standing on the peak, watching the sun rise over a blanket of white mist, you realise why this destination has gained legendary status among Indian trekkers.
Every winding trail, windswept ridge, and silent valley reminds you that the best adventures are often the simplest. Plan well, tread responsibly, and let Meesapulimala reward you with memories that linger long after the descent.
