Gavi-Vagamon-Thekkady Circuit Explained

The Gavi-Vagamon-Thekkady circuit is a development project designed to create a seamless connection between three of Kerala's most bio-diverse zones.

This project was largely fueled by the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, a central government initiative focused on the creation of theme-based tourism circuits.

The eco-tourism circuit aims to provide a sustainable model for travel. By focusing on eco-tourism, the government and local stakeholders want to protect the delicate flora and fauna while allowing visitors to visualize the majesty of nature.  

To enhance the visitor experience, high-end facilities like eco log huts, rain shelters, and cultural centres have been developed using sustainable materials. From the beginning of the planning stages in November and December of recent years, the goal was efficiency and environmental performance.

Gavi-Vagamon-Thekkady 3D Itinerary

Short on time? No worries! This three-day model hits the high notes.

Day 1: Thekkady

Start your journey in Thekkady (Kumily). Why here? Because it’s the gateway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

• Morning: Book a slot for the Periyar Lake Boat Safari. The 7:30 AM slot is the best for spotting elephants and wild boars at the water’s edge.
• Afternoon: Wander through a Spice Plantation. You haven't truly lived until you've smelled fresh green cardamom right off the branch.
• Evening: Catch a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance at local cultural centres. It’s a hypnotic way to end your first day.

Day 2: Gavi

Gavi is only about 40km from Thekkady, but it feels like another planet.

• The Experience: You’ll likely take a Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) Jeep Safari. The drive through the forest is rugged expect to see bison, giant squirrels, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, too.
• Activities: Row a boat on the serene Gavi Lake and visit the Forest Museum. The silence here is so profound you can almost hear the trees talking.

Day 3: Vagamon

Head to Vagamon early (about a 3-hour drive).

• The Meadows: These rolling hills look like a Windows XP wallpaper come to life.
• The Pine Forest: Perfect for those moody, "lost in the woods" Instagram shots.
• Departure: Head back to your transit point (Kochi or Kottayam) with a heart full of mist.

Gavi-Vagamon-Thekkady 4D Itinerary

Four days give you the perfect tempo and room for extra walking trails.

Day 1 & 2: Vagamon

• Day 1: Arrive in Vagamon. Spend your afternoon at the Vagamon Adventure Park. In 2026, the Glass Bridge is the star attraction. Walking 40 meters out over a 3,600-foot drop is the ultimate "don't look down" challenge.
• Day 2: Visit Thangalpara, a massive rock with deep spiritual significance and even deeper views. Later, head to the Marmala Waterfalls for a quick dip if the current is safe

Day 3: Gavi’s Hidden Gems

Since you have more time, dive deeper into Gavi. Instead of a day trip, stay at a Gavi Eco-Lodge. This allows you to explore Chenthamara Kokka, a breathtaking ravine view that most day-trippers miss because they’re rushing back to Thekkady.

Day 4: Thekkady Boating and Spices

Finish in Thekkady. Since you’ve already had your forest fix in Gavi, spend your time here at Periyar Lake Boating. If you're lucky, you'll see wild elephants or bison drinking at the edge of the lake. 

Spend your afternoon shopping for high-quality tea, coffee, and spices in the Kumily market before you head home.

Gavi-Vagamon-Thekkady 5D Itinerary

You’ll find five days to be the magic number. They are long enough to settle in, but short enough to keep the energy high.

Day 1-2: Deep Exploration of Vagamon

• Paragliding: If the conditions are ideal, soar over the Kolahalamedu hills. Vagamon is one of the best paragliding spots in South India.
• Kurishumala: A peaceful trek up the hill to a monastery. Even if you aren't religious, the panoramic views of the Idukki district are a religious experience in themselves.

Day 3: Scenic Drive to Gavi

Take the slow route. The drive from Vagamon to Gavi via the Angamoozhy entry point is one of the most scenic forest corridors in India. You’ll pass the Kochu Pamba Dam, where the reflections of the trees in the water look like a painting.

Day 4: Immerse in the Gavi Eco-Tourism Program and Transfer to Thekkady

Spend a full day in the KFDC program. This includes guided trekking with local experts who can point out rare orchids and medicinal plants. 

Also, visit the Sabarimala Viewpoint, where you can see the famous temple nestled in the hills across the valley. Transfer to Thekkady in the evening.

Day 5: Thekkady Sightseeing

Cap off your trip with an Elephant Junction visit (great for families) and a leisurely walk through a Tea Factory. 

You’ll see how your morning chai is made, from leaf to cup. Buy fresh peppercorns, cinnamon, and vanilla beans to take the scent of Kerala home with you from the spice market. Grab a final Kerala Sadya (traditional meal) for lunch before departing.
