About Phulara Himalayan Adventure
The Phulara Ridge, with an elevation of 12,127 feet (approximately 3,696 meters), is located within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarakhand, India. The Govind Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, in the northwestern part of India. It is part of the Western Himalayas and lies in the vicinity of the Garhwal Himalayas range. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and valleys.
The Phulara Ridge is a popular Uttarakhand trekking destination within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. The trek to Phulara Ridge is known for its wide range of scenic beauty, local cultures, challenging terrain, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Trekkers often start their journey from nearby villages such as Sankri or Taluka and traverse through dense forest, meadows, and rugged terrain of Himalayan regions to reach the ridge.
Phulara Trekking Experience – What is the level of difficulty?
The Phulara Ridge trek is categorized as moderate, making it suitable for reasonably fit beginners. Spanning over 4 days, each day typically involves around 5 hours of trekking, with slightly longer durations on the latter two days.
Located in a geographical region that maintains lower temperatures compared to its surroundings, Phulara Ridge stands out for retaining snow even during the spring season, at altitudes as low as 12,500 feet.
However, it's essential to recognize that despite its moderate rating, the trek presents challenges typical of Himalayan terrain, including variable temperatures and weather conditions. Hence, adequate training for at least a month is advisable before embarking on the Phulara Ridge trek.
How safe is Phulara trek?
In terms of terrain, the Phulara Ridge trek can generally be considered safe due to the following factors:
Well-defined paths that have been frequently used
Gradual inclines along the route
Strategically positioned campsites, which are crucial for mitigating the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Accessible exit points are available at various points along the trail
However, trekkers and trek organizers should exercise caution, particularly during the crossing section. This segment comprises a narrow trail with openings on either side, posing difficult treks with potential challenges during inclement weather, hazy conditions, or when snow is present.
It is advisable for trekkers to navigate this stretch slowly and deliberately, ensuring each step is secure. Additionally, trekking in single file, avoiding overtaking, is recommended to enhance safety. By adhering to these precautions, negotiating this section should be manageable.
Several aspects of the trek contribute to mitigating Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):
Altitude Gain: With the exception of the first day, each day's trek and campsites are strategically located within a normal altitude gain range for that specific day. This gradual ascent, coupled with maintaining a steady pace, reduces the likelihood of experiencing AMS.
Rest and Acclimatization: The second day of the trek is relatively shorter in terms of both distance and altitude gain. This allows trekkers ample time to rest and acclimatize before embarking on the longer summit day, minimizing the risk of AMS.
Descent on Later Days: On the third and fourth days of the trek, there is a significant descent in altitude. This descent aids in recovery from any AMS symptoms that may have got accumulated on the summit day, as descending to lower elevations helps alleviate altitude-related discomfort.
By carefully considering these factors and planning the trek accordingly, trekkers can reduce the likelihood of AMS and ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience on the Phulara Ridge trek.
The optimal time for embarking on the Phulara Ridge trek is during the summer months of May and June. During this period, the snow-capped peaks that dominate the landscape contribute to the awe-inspiring trekking trails.
Furthermore, trekking during this season presents the opportunity to witness several natural wonders. The rare alpenglow phenomenon, where the mountains are bathed in a warm, golden hue during sunrise and sunset, adds to the captivating ambiance. Additionally, trekkers can marvel at the blooming rhododendrons and vibrant meadows of Pushtara, enhancing the overall experience.
In May, the forests and meadows along the trail showcase a stunning array of bright and beautiful flora. As June approaches, the landscape becomes even more lush, with a rich carpet of flowers adorning the surroundings, creating a picturesque setting for trekkers to explore and enjoy.
You can take a flight directly to Dehradun or reach Delhi & book a taxi or bus to Dehradun. From there you need to reach Sankri where the trek begins to Sikolta. Again from Sikolta, you need to do a 3hour trek to Bhoj gadi camp. And to reach the Phulara summit from there, it will take almost 6hours trek.
There are several picturesque camping spots along the Phulara Ridge trek route. These campsites often offer panoramic views of snow capped mountains during winter trek, lush valleys, and alpine meadows, providing trekkers with a serene and immersive experience in nature.
Most camping treks in Uttrakhand in Phulara Ridge involve setting up tents for accommodation, tour packages with custom itinerary. These tents are typically provided by trek organizers or can be rented from local vendors. They offer basic shelter and protection from the elements during the night.
